“ Human beings, whatever their backgrounds, are more open than we think, that their behavior cannot be confidently predicted from their past, that we are all creatures vulnerable to new thoughts, new attitudes. And while such vulnerability creates all sorts of possibilities, both good and bad, its very existence is exciting. It means that no human being should be written off, no change in thinking deemed impossible”. – Howard Zinn
There’s no doubt that everything changes. What you aspire today, you might be forgetting tomorrow. That is because a new learning you’ve encountered taught you of something which may become the turning point of your life.
As I aged, my aspirations also chnaged;
1. TO BECOME A NURSE – This is when my innocent and then loved world still believe in the passion of caring. Perhaps, I was also merely attracted to an all white dress.
2. TO BECOME AN ASTRONAUT – If I would be asked to observe my sorrounding, I would first look up at the sky. I’m always amazed by the clouds, by the different faces of the moon and of course, of the shimmering stars. Astronomical books have been my first favorite books. Lost in Space has been my first astronomical movie. When I was still a kid, I have wished I could become an astronaut at NASA (National Astronomical Services Administration, did I get it right?) and ride on a spaceship or racket someday. I imagine myself viewing Earth from afar in the midst of the universe.
3. TO BECOME THE MOST FAMOUS MATHEMATICIAN AND MULTI-AWARDED SCIENTIST – This is what I aspired back when I was still in high school. During those times, there are only two subjects for me, math and science. I found literature, specially fictions boring ( but I loved sci-fi). I didn’t appreciate Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo and even Harry Potter. What I looked up and idolized were Albert Einstein for his Theory of Relativity, Isaac Newton who, despite of sharp inclination to science, didn’t question the existence of God, of Marie Curie, of Euclid and of Rene Descartes. I believed that everything is embodied in a single equation still unrevealed by human intelligence.
4. TO BECOME A TRAVELLER – I was fourth year high school when I found travelling to different places from Cagayan of the north and to Aklan of the South (and the spots located within those provinces) worthwhile. I loved smelling the fresh air just right after I step out of the vehicle to greet the new panorama. I also started to appreciate cultural diversity and practice cultural sensitivity.
5. TO BECOME A DOCTOR OF MEDICINE – Since from the start, I really loved science. Moreover, I appreciated my course more when we started Medical-Surgical Nursing. Understanding the interaction of medicines, pathogens, the human body and other factors affecting it is a great advantage for self – preservation. Furthermore, this profession is a good means of utilizing brain cells for saving and helping people attain a quality health and a humane life. If I would become a doctor, I would be not just only of brains. I would be an equilibrium of “neural” and “cardiac” function.
6. TO BECOME A LAWYER – As my political and social awareness heightens, my desire for knowing what’s constitutional and not makes me unsatieted inspite of the studies and learnings I have already taken. A person craving for social change should know the constitution first. From knowing the norms and the things that are already established, means for achieving change would be easier. Being knowledgeable of the rule of law would save me and the people from deception of those who maintain the status quo. So for those who hold the status quo, beware of my entrance to the world of law!
I still have not reached half of the path of my journey. I know I have to learn more and to strive more to reach that end. Wherever my aspirations would bring me, one thing would be for sure, I woudn’t just be a person of success, I wouls also be a person of value.
My family would give me that “value”. So in searching for the world where I would best be fitted, my family would always be the core of my journey.
